Overview

PANTERA

Pantera was an American heavy metal band formed in Arlington, Texas.

Their classic lineup was:

Phil Anselmo • Dimebag Darrell
Rex Brown • Vinnie Paul

They started as a glam metal band, then became one of the biggest groove metal bands ever.

Their breakthrough came with the 1990 album Cowboys from Hell, which marked a shift to a heavier and more aggressive style.

After that, they released highly influential albums including Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), and The Great Southern Trendkill (1996).

Pantera became famous for heavy riffs, aggressive vocals, and intense live performances.

Songs like Walk, Cemetery Gates, and Cowboys from Hell became defining metal songs of the 1990s.

Glam metal

Before Cowboys from Hell, Pantera had a glam metal era with huge hair, flashy outfits, and classic 80s metal sounds.

Their most popular glam albums include:

Metal Magic (1983)
Projects in the Jungle (1984)
I Am the Night (1985)
Power Metal (1988)

Personal opinion

My favorite Pantera show is probably Moscow 1991. The crowd was massive and the whole performance was crazy. Dime, Vinnie and Rex were locked in and it’s one of the coolest live metal shows ever to me.

I still think Phil was the main reason the band fell apart. Things got worse between the members over time and everything eventually collapsed. A lot of fans also blame Phil for the tension and chaos surrounding everything before Dime’s death.
